Decision-Making at the Edge of Uncertainty
Most leaders do not fail because they refuse to act.
They fail because reality changes, priorities shift, assumptions go unchallenged, and actions continue long after their original rationale has expired.
Whether responding to a security incident, managing a crisis, leading an organisation through disruption or making decisions in fast-moving environments, leaders are rarely afforded complete information, unlimited time or perfect certainty.
Yet decisions still need to be made.
VECTOR™ was developed to help navigate that challenge.
At its core, VECTOR is a practical decision-making model designed for operating at the edge of uncertainty. It provides a structured approach for establishing reality, identifying priorities and taking deliberate action when information is incomplete and consequences matter.
The model consists of four interconnected decision phases:
Regulate
Verify
Prioritise
Execute
These phases are connected by one defining concept:
Continuous Reassessment.
Continuous Reassessment is not a review conducted after decisions are made. It is the discipline of continually testing whether our understanding remains valid, whether our priorities remain appropriate and whether our actions are producing the intended effect as circumstances evolve.
Through this cycle, VECTOR seeks to create five outcomes:
Clarity. Understanding. Direction. Progress. Adaptation.
Together, they form a simple leadership narrative:
Clarity enables Understanding.
Understanding establishes Direction.
Direction creates Progress.
Progress drives Adaptation.
Adaptation improves the next decision.
Importantly, VECTOR is scalable.
It can be applied by an individual making a rapid decision under pressure, by a team conducting structured analysis, or by an organisation coordinating multiple decision cycles simultaneously through shared intent, delegated authority and continuous reassessment.
The model is underpinned by a simple principle:
Establish Reality. Identify Priorities. Take Deliberate Action.
And guided by an equally simple philosophy:
Solve the Next Problem First.
VECTOR is not intended to replace plans, procedures or existing decision-making frameworks.
It is intended to provide leaders with a practical lens through which to understand complexity, navigate uncertainty and remain aligned with reality as situations evolve.
Over the coming months, I will be exploring the model through the Leadership on the Edge series, applying VECTOR™ to real-world case studies from military operations, exploration, crisis management, sport and corporate leadership.
Because understanding a decision-making model is one thing.
Seeing it applied to real leadership challenges is another.
And perhaps the most important lesson underpinning VECTOR is this:
Good decision-makers act. Great decision-makers reassess.
