Former home affairs secretary Michael Pezzullo warns China's cyber activities 'close to an act of war,' with key Australian systems at risk


Former home affairs secretary Michael Pezzullo has warned China's efforts to undermine the nation's cyber security is akin to "dynamite already being placed on bridges". Chinese President Xi Jinping has set 2027 as the date he expects the island to be retaken by Beijing, something he describes as an "inevitability," but which could spark a major conflict and would draw in the US and allies including Australia.



 

 

Billions of dollars invested into autonomous weapons system for ADF


The Australian Defence Force is looking to recruit more robots. Around 14 billion dollars has been announced for developing autonomous weapons systems to remove more humans from the battlefield. But as Science and Technology Correspondent Brent O'Halloran reports, some analysts have serious concerns.



 

 

eSafety Commissioner calls for stronger GenAI safeguards in wake of deepfake arrest


Australia’s eSafety Commissioner, Julie Inman Grant, has called on “the purveyors and profiteers of AI” to shoulder a greater share of the burden when it comes to protecting individuals from deepfake abuse. Grant made the comments following the arrest of a Victorian schoolboy for creating and distributing deepfake images of about 50 female students at Bacchus Marsh Grammar.



 

 

Did Kim Jong-un Really Seek to Denuclearize?


Former South Korean President Moon Jae-in claims in his memoir that Kim Jong-un's 2018 denuclearization promise was sincere, but evidence from the 2019 Hanoi Summit suggests otherwise. Kim's limited offer and subsequent actions, including halting negotiations, indicate he never intended full denuclearization and sought to gain time for further nuclear development.



 

Call for More Australian Government Cybersecurity Funding


A recent poll conducted by exposure management business Tenable shows that 79% of Australian IT and cybersecurity professionals think the Australian government could do more, including boosting funding, to reduce cybersecurity risks.



 

 

Scam alert: Fake ASIC branding is appearing on social media scams


ASIC is warning consumers about the misuse of ASIC’s logo on social media to promote fake investments and stock market trading courses and cold calling, and Telegram impersonations. ASIC has received a number of reports about ads for a ‘Stock Trading Master Class’. The ads have been seen on social media platforms, display the ASIC logo and claim to be sponsored by ASIC.
